Stephen Grady is an Australian singer-songwriter and musician.
Under the name ‘Steve Grady’ he has released two solo albums,
Hotel Chelsea and Youth Skin, and three EPs, A Cross Section,
Blue River and A Year’s Gone By. In 2016, Grady formed folk
duo ‘The Ahern Brothers’ with Josh Rennie-Hynes, with the pair
releasing their self-titled debut album in 2017 to critical acclaim.
Grady was born in Papua New Guinea, where he raised by
Missionaries. He later moved to Redcliffe, Queensland with his
family. Although his Mother was a highly skilled pianist and music
teacher, it wasn’t until watching the Crowded House farewell
concert in 1996 on TV that Grady decided he wanted to write
songs. His music has been compared to James Taylor, Ryan
Adams, Gordon Lightfoot, & Paul Kelly.
After completing a Bachelor of Music in 2007, Grady went on to
form alt-country band, ‘Inntown’, with long time collaborator, Dan
Parsons. Inntown released an EP, Forget About It, and became a
regular live act in the Brisbane music scene. Grady then turned
his sights onto solo releases, as well as performing solo and
as a live and session guitarist for many singer songwriters and
bands in the QLD music scene.
Grady is a multiple QMusic Award nominee and APRA songwriting
award winner and has been featured on ABC Radio, Double J and
Triple J. Grady’s songwriting has always been admired by peers
and critics, with Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson covering
Grady’s painful ditty, “She Waits Till I’m Asleep” featured on their
delux Wreck and Ruin album (2012). He has toured nationally
and internationally as a solo artist, guitarist, and as The Ahern
Brothers. In 2017, The Ahern Brothers, were the main support
for the full national tour for Tex, Don, & Charlie, playing 24 soldout
shows in theatres and halls around Australia.
On a personal note, for many years Grady suffered from severe
stage fright and a crippling fear of releasing music (he has 3
unreleased albums). He had all but decided to quit music, and
removed all of his solo work from the internet. It wasn’t until
relocating to Melbourne in 2016, meeting his partner Lauren,
and then forming The Ahern Brothers and the surprise success
of their album, that Grady’s life and career began to turn
around. Building upon this new confidence, he is now focusing
on releasing a new solo album in 2018 under his proper name,
Stephen Grady. He is currently working with producer and multiinstrumentalist,
Greg J. Walker at his home studio in Gippsland,
Victoria.
